DO YOU KNOW THE WWE DRAFT?
The WWE Draft, also known as the WWE Superstar Shake-up, is an annual event that takes place within WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), the world's leading professional wrestling organization. The Draft is an opportunity for WWE executives to select the superstars that will be part of each of its two main brands, Raw and SmackDown.
The first edition of the WWE Draft took place on March 25, 2002, following the acquisition of WCW and the demise of ECW. At the time, WWE had a large roster of wrestlers, including superstars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H. With the acquisition of WCW, WWE gained even more wrestlers, including Goldberg, Diamond Dallas Page, and Booker T.
To deal with the large number of wrestlers, WWE decided to split its wrestlers into two distinct brands: Raw and SmackDown. Each brand would have its own set of championships, pay-per-view events, and stories. This would allow WWE to create more rivalries and exciting storylines, as well as give wrestlers more opportunities to break through.
The first WWE Draft was held on Raw on March 25, 2002. Vince McMahon and Ric Flair, the executives of Raw and SmackDown respectively, alternately selected the wrestlers they wanted for their respective brands. Some of the highlights of the first draft included the selection of The Rock by SmackDown, the selection of Undertaker by Raw and the transfer of Brock Lesnar from SmackDown to Raw.
The WWE Draft became an annual event starting in 2004. The Draft format and rules have changed over the years. In some editions, brand executives were chosen by a random draw, while in other editions, they were determined by wrestling matches. In some editions, fighters were selected in pairs or trios instead of individually.
Over the years, the WWE Draft has produced some of the most exciting and surprising moments in WWE history. In 2005, John Cena was drafted by SmackDown, where he became WWE Champion for the first time. In 2008, the Draft saw the breakup of famous tag teams such as The Hardy Boyz and D-Generation X. In 2011, the Draft saw the surprise return of The Rock, who was selected by Raw and became the host of WrestleMania 27.
In 2016, WWE changed the name of the Draft to the WWE Brand Extension Draft and introduced some rule changes. The brands were rebranded as Raw and SmackDown Live, and the two brands began having separate live shows. The Draft became a two-night event, with the first night held on Raw and the second on SmackDown Live.
Currently, the WWE Draft continues to be a major event on WWE programming. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see which fighters will be selected for each brand and how the stories will unfold in the weeks and months ahead. The WWE Draft is an opportunity for WWE to show its fans that it is always looking to innovate and create exciting new stories for its superstars.
